The Whaplode Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum enables our children to be equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience to succeed in life. It aims to help them to understand how they are developing personally, socially and emotionally whilst enabling them to understand and value how they fit in and contribute to the school and wider society. The PSHE curriculum we offer equips children with relevant and meaningful content which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing children’s physical and mental health. It also allows us to consider the needs of individual children and support their needs.
The children learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and all of our differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. Other aspects of PSHE such as British values are consistently and deeply rooted in the school’s core values and are constantly worked on and intertwined throughout all lessons and the school day.
At Whaplode, we use the Jigsaw scheme of work to inform our PSHE curriculum.
Children take part in weekly lessons which give them the opportunity to explore, clarify and challenge their own and others attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities.
During PSHE lessons the children will learn to recognise their own worth, work with others and become more responsible for their own learning and development. They will be able to reflect on their own experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
We aim to ensure that our pupils enjoy their PSHE learning and are equipped with the skills to develop positive and healthy relationships with their peers now and in the future. If children are able to feel safe and listened to this will in turn have a positive impact on their ability to learn. The skills that they learn within PSHE lessons supports them to become life-long learners.
Jigsaw combines PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. It is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time.
Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from September to July). Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.
